There are many power lifters who stand under six feet tall, are very muscular and "stocky" looking, yet can blast upwards from a standing start and easily dunk a basketball with two hands. The calves are your last push off from the ground, and if properly trained and conditioned, can add a significant boost to your vertical leap. Calf raises, either weighted or unweighted, consist you standing on a ledge such as stairs or a chair, with your heel hanging off. You then push up, using your calf muscle, until you have reached the furthest point of extension that your ankle will allow. Your "push upwards" should be powerful, yet controlled. You should never push off with so much force that your feet leave the surface of the ledge you are standing on. If this is the case you need to add more weight to you workout. Calf "Hops" are when you bounce up and down off of the ground in short quick hops. You should never bend your knees or hips during this exercise, only your ankle joint should be active. A good strength foundation for optimum vertical jumping consists of strong legs as a whole, as well as your back and core muscles. Without solid strength here, it is unlikely that doing all the &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;plyometrics&lt;/span&gt; in the world will help you gain more than a couple of inches. That is because &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;plyometric&lt;/span&gt; exercises increase how quickly your leg muscles react and move. They do not, however, increase strength. No matter how fast you muscles can react, if they cannot exert a powerful enough force, you will never reach you vertical jumps maximum potential.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now don't get us wrong, this does not mean we suggest not starting a vertical jump program right away, because believe us that is the best way to start training your vertical leap. It DOES mean that if you would consider yourself as having a weaker foundation of strength, you should spend as much effort on increasing strength as you do working on your vertical explosiveness. You may be asking, how do I increase strength in these areas? Well there is an easy and clear cut answer to this. Squats and &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;deadlifts&lt;/span&gt;!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Squats and &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;deadlifts&lt;/span&gt; are to fundamental strength training exercises that will work on and build up all of the necessary gains in strength you will need in order to fully realize your vertical jumps full potential. They are both multi-joint strength training lifts in which, if done properly, you can move a lot of weight, and make a lot of strength gains quite quickly. However, one key part of performing these two lifts is that you execute them with &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;precise&lt;/span&gt; form. You do NOT want to cheat in these lifts. Not only will good form prevent injury, it will also allow you to fully &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;maximize&lt;/span&gt; the lift and see the most gains. There is a reason that it is easier to move more weight while cheating form, it is because you are not stimulating all of the correct muscles, and more often than not are not using a full range of motion in your lift. Food, drinks, and supplements are where you get the &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;necessary&lt;/span&gt; nutrition your body needs to keep running, which is especially important if you are an athlete and are constantly putting your body through hard workouts and pushing it to the limit. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Consider the following: Athlete A trains for 2 hours each and every day, and puts forth maximum effort during each workout, while athlete B only trains for a half hour a day, three times a week, but also puts forth maximum effort during the workout. Athlete A's doesn't keep track of his diet, does not drink enough water, and regularly eats junk food and not near enough healthy food. &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;Some days&lt;/span&gt; he eats a lot and other days he doesn't eat nearly as much as he should. Athlete B on the other hand closely watches his diet, planning each and every meal. He drinks plenty of water, rarely eats junk food, and always makes sure to eat enough to give his body the energy it needs.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Who will see the best results?? &lt;p&gt;The answer is without a doubt Athlete B! Although he could be putting forth more time into his training, but because of his well planned diet he will blow away Athlete A's results in no time at all. Athlete A will be left wondering why, and only Athlete B will know his secret weapon, his diet.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;There are many keys to a successful diet to keep your body going and seeing the vertical increasing gains you desire. We will touch on the most important factors that you MUST have in your diet in order to see the best results from your workouts. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Water-&lt;/strong&gt; Water should never be underestimated, it is quite possibly the most important element on Earth, and you need to consume a lot of it. Shoot to consume an ounce of water for every pound of body weight you have. It sounds like a lot, but if you break it up through out the day it is really quite easy. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Protein-&lt;/strong&gt; Protein is the building blocks for muscle, and should be consumed in plenty by anyone doing vertical increasing workouts. Once again, shoot for about 0.75-1 grams of protein per pound of body weight. It can be quite useful to have a supplement such as whey protein to help you reach this number, but you should also be getting protein from natural sources such as lean meats, tuna, peanut butter, milk, etc. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Eat Enough-&lt;/strong&gt; If you are eating less calories in a day than your body is burning you will NEVER see any vertical increasing gains. Quite simply, your body needs an excess of calories in order to build muscle and increase strength. Try to go about 500 calories over the amount you are burning every day in order to keep those &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;muscle&lt;/span&gt; growing. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Supplement-&lt;/strong&gt; Supplement is by all means optional, but can also add to your gains and make your life easier. It is not a magic solution to see instant amazing results, but rather a tool to help you get where you are going more efficiently. We recommend protein and vitamin supplements, and in some cases &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;creatine&lt;/span&gt;. Loading the muscles before takeoff is an essential part of jumping higher. It can be one of the trickiest things to learn in the jumping process, and is what holds some people back from reaching the high levels of vertical leap (35+ inches) that they desire. I would highly, HIGHLY recommend studying these jumpers form, and well as the form of other well known jumpers, and engraving that image into your mind before you begin working on this yourself. It is a very technical and complicated motion, which can take a good athlete years to master. We are going to do our best to break down the mechanics and basic stages of it, in order to assist you in your learning and overall goal of jumping higher. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;1. The Approach- &lt;/strong&gt;Notice in the videos how the athletes bound towards their destination, taking large, smooth strides, covering a lot of distance in a quick amount of time. This bounding motion is what allows you to smoothly transition into the next step of a proper load for jumping higher, the plant. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. The Plant- &lt;/strong&gt;Watch the videos once again and observe how the athletes firmly plant their feet into the ground before takeoff. This is actually the last step of the process that we are going to call "the plant". It begins on your last bounding step, and ends when both feet make contact with the ground. Referring to the videos again, notice that both leapers have both feet off the ground and make a strong and powerful motion toward the area in which they eventually land and plant their feet. This is the hardest part to learn to do properly, and can only be truly learned by studying the form of jumpers who have already mastered it, and practicing with a true passion and will to begin jumping higher. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3. The Load- &lt;/strong&gt;The loading phase is the stage where you get all the power which you will be using to blast up and off the ground, and is also where many athletes lose many potential vertical inches and fall short of reaching their full potential. The phase of "the plant" where both your feet are off of the ground and are powerfully moving to the planted position is what allows your muscles to build up massive amounts of power (we will go over the science of this in a later article). You are essentially building up the most explosive power possible in your legs by recreating the situations you go through in plyometric exercise. Once you have built up the maximum amount of potential energy during the loading stage, your are ready for the final step, take off. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. Take Off-&lt;/strong&gt; This is the final stage of jumping higher by loading your legs where you convert all your potential energy into a massive force as you thrust your arms upward towards the sky and push off the ground with all your might, skying into the air like you never thought possible before. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;If after watching the videos of Vince Carter and Nate Robinson loading before their huge vertical leaps, and reading through this article, you know you do not load for your jump properly, than there is both good news and bad news. The bad news is that it can be a terribly difficult and frusterating process to master, requiring hours of trial and error, practice, and hard work. The good news? By doing this, you are tricking your bodies nervous system into allowing your muslce to perform fast and powerful explosive movements. It isn't a magic pill that will make you jump six inches higher overnight, but it has proven to be vital in any vertical jump training program. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What kind of exercises are "plyometric"? &lt;p&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Plyometric exercises are any exercises that are performed, usually in a jumping motion, quickly and explosively. Squats, deadlifts, or cleans would not be considered a form of plyometric exercise, but rather power lifts. Some exercises that are generally seeing in a plyometric training program are depth jumps, box jumps, side box jumps, one footed box jumps, jumping rope, etc. (many others exist as well as tons of variations of varying difficulty). &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Is plyometric training safe? &lt;p&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Although this topic is contreversial, we believe that plyometric exercises are completely safe, as long as you know your limits when performing the exercises and build up to higher and more complicated motions and workouts. A beginner could easily make the mistake of doing exercises that require too much strength and practice to perform properly, resulting in injury. One way to keep plyometric exercises easier on your joints is to perform them on a soft surface, such as grass or a mat in the gym. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Can anyone perform a plyometric training routine? &lt;p&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;While anyone &lt;em&gt;can&lt;/em&gt; perform a plyometric workout, it is generally recommended that if you already do not have a strong base of strength, that you work on your overall body strength first, with emphasis on the lower body. The your strength, especially in your legs, will determine the potential of plyometric training to increase your vertical leap. If you are a very strong individual already, there is a lot of stored energy and power within your muscles that just needs to be trained to perform in a quick and explosive manner. However, if you are relatively weak, there isn't going to be much stored power and explosiveness within you to convert into added inches on your vertical leap through plyometric training. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Conclusion &lt;p&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;It has been proven time and again that plyometric training, although far from the only factor, is one of the most important tools at your disposal if you are training to increase your vertical jump. Without motivation and a drive to accomplish your goal you will never increase your vertical leap by more than a few small inches. To get the large gains you desire, you can't ever lose sight of you goal. &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2.
